Thornes Jessop in Hunslet, Leeds
« on: Saturday 02 March 13 23:52 GMT (UK) »
This is my first post, so be kind to me  ;D  Let me know if I am doing this all wrong!

I am looking for information about the Thornes and Jessop families from Hunslet, Leeds.  My records show that John Lee Thornes (1854) and  Eliza Jessop (1866) had the following children:
Elsie Thornes (b.1897)
Carrie Thornes (b.1897- d. 1897)
 Annie Thornes (b. 1889)
Mildred Thornes (1901)

Eliza Jessop's father was Thomas Jessop (1846)
She had the following siblings:
Emma J. Jessop (b. 1869)
Ann Jessop (b. 1871)
Caroline Jessop (b. 1874)
Willie Jessop (b. 1875)
Mary Jessop (b. 1877)
Tom Jessop (b. 1881)

I know that Eliza eventually went to the United States with William Bindley in March 1910.  According to my grandfather (Eliza was his grandmother), some members of the Thornes family migrated to the US and other remained in England.  I am trying to find anything I can to locate any of the living relatives of these Thornes or Jessops.

Thanks for any assistance you can give me.

Kind regards,
Amy

Hello Amy,

All three children you mention (Annie, Elsie, Mildred) sailed to New York with Eliza and William Bindley, all are entered as Bindley on the passenger list.

So which Thornes stayed in England?  Are you referring to John Lee Thornes siblings?

I did see in 1901 John and Eliza have a son Fred age 19, but he doesn't show on the 1891 census.  Do you know anything about him?

Dear Libby9  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks so much.  I could not figure out the Fred Thornes connection, but I think you got it.  It looks like Clara was his mom and maybe she died in childbirth?  I also was confused about Fred only appearing on the 1901 census but not the 1891 census.  Where was he?  I guess I should be looking at Clara's siblings and John Lee's in case they took him in after his mom died?  I know nothing about him.  He only appeared in the 1901 census-  just to confuse me  ::)

I can see in the marriage index that Eliza Thornes and John Lee both are listed in the same year-  cant find the date now.  I cant find parish records.  But what is strange is that when Eliza takes Annie, Elsie, and Mildred to the States in 1910, John Lee appears in the 1911 census as widowed.  (Visiting his sister when the census was taken) According to my grandfather's accounts, Elsie never legally took  the Bindley name , but just used it to travel.  Would Eliza have  obtained a divorce?  We were always told John Lee died and she remarried William Bindley.

My understanding was that the MANY members of Thornes and Jessop family moved to the states and then moved back.  From what I see now, I think that Eliza's Jessop family and Thornes siblings remained in England and only Eliza left.  My great grandmother Elsie (now Bennett) returned to Leeds via Liverpool during WWI with her son Donald to escape a polio epidemic in NY.  She stayed with an Aunt.  I think that what I need to do is start focusing on the Jessops and Thornes in England.  I can't seem to find anyone on any sites researching "my" branches of the family!

Thank you so much for helping out with Fred.  I really appreciate it.  I think I need to step back and figure where to go next!!!!

Kind regards, Amy

Would Eliza have  obtained a divorce?

It's doubtful Amy, divorce was unaffordable to all except the wealthy back then.
