sigman family from russia or poland
« on: Wednesday 06 March 13 11:30 GMT (UK) »
i'm looking for my great grandfather and his families information.  he was born abt 1888 possiby in west poland or russia died in the 1950's in the united states.  his father is moishe/morris sigman died abt 1917 mother ida steingold.  he married my great grandmother rose/ruchel dick also from poland or russia.
the following info is via one of his daughters--samuel was born in poland on the german side. he attended a german school until he was 12yoa and spoke yiddish, polish, and german. he moved to cincinnati, ohio by the time he was 13yoa to be with his father via boat from hamburg, germany to ellis island, new york.
so far i am unable to locate any death certificates and/or birth certificates.  i do have a copy of his marriage certificate application to rose and her naturalization document, 1920, and 1940 census.  all my great aunts, uncles and grand parents have passed and so no further information at this time.  any help will be greatly appreciated, kim

Here's the marriage licence application for Samuel Sigman, tailor, & Rose Dick- mother listed as Steingold (not Streingold as indexed) and father Moritz:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XZLN-F2Q

Not sure if this is Samuel's father-

Morris Sigman, widower, married Bessie Harris in 1902-

Morris Sigman died 1924-
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X69K-DL4
Wonder if this is the same Morris & Bessie living in Kentucky in 1920-

Moses Sigman in 1900 census- widower, to U.S. 1892, shoemaker- but no family listed:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MM8D-D7Y
The Morris Sigman who married Bessie Harris gave occupation as shoemaker in 1902 but Matzoh baker in 1924.

Bessie Sigman died 1941, buried in same cemetery as Morris Sigman (1924)- if you think Morris is your Samuel's father then would be worth contacting cemetery to see if they have any damily details-

thank you, for your help however i'm not sure the morris you've located is related. i'll have to see what other documentation i can find to verify that.  i have a copy of samuel and rose's marriage application which is where i was able to obtain their parents names.  i've been told his father americanized his name from moishe to morris when he came over but not sure if he legally changed it.  moishe and ida had 3 children that i'm aware of: samuel born about 1888 and died possibly in the 1950's, william sigman, and henry segman which my aunt believes is possibly samuel and william's 1/2 brother unk mother.  rose and samuel had 4 children, ida sara/shirley sigman born 1912 cincinnati, ohio; jacob/jack richard sigman (my grandfather) born 1913 cincinnati, ohio; yeta/edith sigman born 1920 cleveland, ohio; and marshal harley sigman born 1934 los angeles, california.

Here is Sam on the California death index:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VPWW-RXZ

This appears to have his WWII draft registration card - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V4DM-SP9  Go to the next page after to see a physical description of him.

The date of birth is slightly different than the one on the death index, but I wonder if this is his WWI draft registration card - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K6FH-CBY

Sam appears to be on a naturalization index here:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K84G-VK6  It looks like the naturalization papers are available on www.fold3.com, which is a subscription site but does often have free trial offers.

thank you both so much for your help.  i had previously found his marriage certificate and the link you have is the same.  i also believe both the WWI and WWII registration cards are his due to the signatures look the same and also as on his marriage certificate.  i do still want to confirm those are him prior to adding them. i've recently requested a copy of his death certificate and am in the process of requesting his naturalization papers, thanks to your help and the link.  i'm not sure about the census due to the wife's name being different (wife ida steingold) and i haven't found documentation of a second wife yet.  i will keep looking though. again thank you both so much for all your help!!!!

There's a burial listing for Morris here - http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Sigman&GSiman=1&GScty=106302&GRid=94743013&  You might want to try requesting a picture of the gravestone on that site and seeing if the volunteer can check if there are any other Sigmans buried near him.

There are a lot of online Cincinnati city directories that may be helpful to you - http://virtuallibrary.cincinnatilibrary.org/virtuallibrary/vl_citydir.aspx  I can see Moses Siegman, shoe maker, at least as early as 1894.  Later, he seems to change to Moses Sigman or Morris Sigman.

Hi Kim,
I know it's been 2 years since you posted on here but I thought I would try to reach out anyway. I'm also looking for information on a Sigman relative (my great grandmother) of Russian, possibly of Jewish ancestory. You don't have any Vera Sigmans in your family tree do you? If not, it's fine. I'm just searching for a needle in a haystack and have exhausted my searching in Ancestory.com.  Best of luck to you! -Elana
