Yes, he seems to have lied a little about his age in 1861.
1871 and 1881 have him down as being born ca. 1816 and he could also match the death in Hereford RD 1890 age 75.

Hello there,

Re:  Birth Certificate for Thomas snr.  Civil registration began in 1837, before this you will have to rely on Parish Registers.

Did find this on FreeBMD though -

Birth 1860 - Thomas James Francis
     Volume - 11a     Page - 68
Quarter -  June     District - Abergavenny

It's the only Thomas Francis listed around the time you specified, so is a distinct possibility!!

By the way there is a Robert Francis listed in St. Margaret in 1861 & 71, but his wife is named Elizabeth.  His age is given as 62 in 1861, and 77 in 1871 - could this be his father ??  I'll leave you to figure that one out.   ;)

Sue

Hi I believe we are researching the same family - Francis from St Michaelchurch Eskley/St Margaret's.
My great x2 grandmother was called Mary Austin nee Francis b1865 At Margaret's.
Thomas Francis b1816 brother Richard p 1816 was my 4x great grandfather.
If you would like to exchange info please reply to this message
