Ellen Davis Gloucester 1871 lookup please

Hi,

I'm looking for 1871 or other information on an Ellen Davis born June 1866 in Northleach Gloucester. In 1881 she was living with her Aunt in Nottingham (Hannah Higgins nee Dix) & Hannah's daughter Mary Dix also born Northleach.

Any help would be appreciated.

I can find no other Ellen, but don't understand why on the 1881 Ellen is Ellen Davis Niece if she was in fact a daughter. I've found an Ellen Davis birth registered in Gloucester in !866, but there are only 2 Ellen Dix's registered between 1864 & 1865 and neither of those was anywhere near Gloucester, so I'm a bit stymied.

Hi Bob,

Was the Ellen Davis birth you found registered in Northleach?

Have you found your girl on any other census?  Where did you get her details from? Do you definitely know that she is related to this Hannah Higgins. Are the Higgins and the Dix family in your tree?

Where did you find those births for Ellen Dix - 1837 or elsewhere?

If all else fails it may be worthwhile applying directly to Register Office for 1865/6 for Ellen Davis, Northleach and see if they find anything(Northleach now registers between Cheltenham and Circencester)

Sorry it sounds like 20 questions - just trying to get the  picture

Hi Tricia,

The Ellen Davis I found was registered at Gloucester and this was on BMDIndex. The 2 Ellen Dix's I found were in AMJ 1864, one at Methyr Tydfil 11a 358, and t'other at Stafford 6b 15.

Ellen Davis is my cousins Grandmother. Her death certificate give her name as Ellen Elizabeth Louisa Simpson died 1850, age 86.

On the 1901, her PoB is Nottingham, on the 1891 its Cheltenham. A copy of the marriage certificate obtained in 1921 when husband Arthur was killed in a mining accident states she married in July 1886 aged 22, but gave no fathers name.

A search for Ellen Davis in the 1881 on FamilyHistoryOnline produces Elizabeth Ellen Davis aged 17, but from a seemingly well to do family in Nottingham, (they have a servant) and Ellen Davis aged 16, listed as the niece of Hannah Higgins & born in Northleach. Mary Dix (Dau) aged 23 & Ernest Dix Grandson are also listed.

Just so you know, the 1891 list the family as Amper, but when you see the original, & know who you are looking for, its the Simpsons.

I think that covers everything.

Thats very true, but as you know the trick is knowing just which little bit in all the bits you're staring at is the key!

Your post can turn into a long, boring essay, so perhaps its best to get people interested, and to start asking specific questions, like I want to know MORE.
