I see that there's a family tree up on the GENI Site for this family. I can't seem to access it, - is this an Australian only family history Site?

I can't see any public trees on ancestry for your man, only for the Joseph Henry born 1868 Tumut.

I don't know about the GENI site.

If you put Joseph Henry McGowen Australia in to a search engine you will come up with quite a few hits.

This is ancestry's other site where you should be able to access the info.

Yes, I have the Mundia Site as a Phone App, - brilliant way of accessing Ancestry!

And J.H. McGowan does seem to pop up a lot on Google, - possibly because his father, James Sinclair McGowen was (briefly) Premier of NSW.

I am assuming that you have accessed the WW1 records for

Joseph Henry MCGOWEN
On his application in Jan 1916 his postal address is in Neutral Bay. When he enlisted Muriel's address was given as Palace St, Petersham (suburb of Sydney), which is also the address of his father - see below.  In 1916 note is made of the new address - Muriel was with a Mrs J T? FRY at Turner St, Waratah (suburb of Newcastle).
He was overseas from May 1916 to Feb 1919.

There is also a record for
Frank Noel MCGOWEN, sadly died of shrapnel wound in the back in Alexandria
Enlisted 1914, b Redfern abt 1895. Next of kin: father J S T MCGOWEN, Palace St, Petersham. A later NoK is given - his brother - J H MCGOWEN, Euralla St, Burwood.  this addition is not dated. Joseph gives his mother's name as Emily.

I guess the Frank Noel MCGOWEN at the same address as Joseph and Alice Muriel in the 1940s is their son named for his uncle.

Thanks for all that Judith.

Yes, I found the WW1 Records, - it was the Australian Census records that I couldn't access.

I am trying to ascertain if there are any living descendants.

Hi

There are no Australian census records accessable to the public, censuses from 2001 asked about the retention of the information for release in 99 years, those who said yes was retained, the rest destroyed. Australian censuses earlier than this were destroyed. There are a handful of State censuses with limited information from the 19th century.
