Butchers in Raunds Circa 1870
« on: Tuesday 12 March 13 20:58 GMT (UK) »
Hiya

Would anyone have any knowledge of a John Cooper b 1850 Raunds who I think ran a Butcher Shop in Raunds about 1868 - 1870.

Came across an entry in the Criminal Register John Cooper (Northamptonshire) 7 March 1870  sentence was 6 months Hard Labour, I have also found a photograph from another source  with the text (see attachment)

John married in Sept 1870 and  he and his wife the emigrated to the USA, found the USA Census for 1880 and it states that his profession was a Butcher.

The question I am asking would John and his wife be allowed to go to the States in 1870 if he had a criminal record.

Regards

Northamptonshire, Norfolk, USA

Ah, the witty newspaper writer. ;)

I doubt that criminal records would have affected anybody's immigration chances at that time. No computers!

My gr-grfather emigrated to Australia from the UK in the 1880s, then went back to England, then emigrated permanently to Canada after 1900, with wife and kids in tow, all under a completely false name. No criminal conviction as such, but desertion from the British military after 5 years in India c1878. But obviously not even identification was needed.

Is the John Cooper in the US yours and you're trying to figure out whether he was this John Cooper?
Or is this John Cooper yours and you're trying to figure out whether he went to the US?

If there's anything else you can tell about your John Cooper, and you'd like help sorting him out in either case, do provide the info you have and many will be glad to help.

(My Coopers were solidly Nottinghamshire, but I can't resist a good Cooper hunt when I have work to do.)

This looks like probably the John in question, in Raunds in 1861, given the father's occupation - ?

William Cooper, 36, grocer (all born Raunds)
Caroline Cooper, wife, 43
George Adams, son-in-law (Caroline's son), 13
John W Cooper, 10 (might we guess John William?)
Owen H Cooper, 5

Caroline is a widow in 1871, herself the grocer, with son Owen and granddaughter Martha Allen, 4. John does seem to have disappeared.

No marriage for a John Cooper in Thrapston reg dist up to 1870 though (except 1862, too early). You mentioned emigrating with a wife and a marriage in Sept 1870 -- must have been in another place.

In fact, there doesn't seem to be a birth for him, either, at least not in Thrapston reg dist.

William Cooper and Caroline Adams married in Thrapston reg dist in March quarter 1850 in Thrapston reg dist.

Morning David.

Quote

Isn't 18 a bit young to be running a butcher's shop unless his Mother
helped him buy it?

From the N.M.I.

Raunds P.C.
24-Mar 1850
William COOPER otp, bachelor, of full age, shoemaker, father Benjamin, labourer to
Caroline ADAMS otp, widow, of full age, shop keeper, father John, shoemaker

Something strange about Caroline and 1st marriage to Thomas Adams, a Mason,
as it does not seem to appear on the N.M.I. but I have now found it in Raunds.

Thomas died aged 37 in 1846.

From the Northampton Mercury Saturday March 5th 1870

Lent Assizes, County Prisoners
John Cooper, 19, butcher charged with stealing 5 sheep, at Raunds,
on the 25th February.

Then as you say David from the Northampton Criminal Record 7th March.
No. 9, John Cooper, Sheep Stealing, Imprisonment 6 Calendar Months. h.l. (Hard Labour).

So did he marry Sarah Nunneley in Sep 1870, if so then it certainly appears
to be your man in Newark, Essex, New Jersey.

I can see that the John above married Sarah in St Sep on 13 Sep 1870.

I will check the father to see if it is William.

He then arrives in New York on 10th November 1870 with Sarah.

It looks as though Sarah may have been the daughter of Thomas Nunneley
also spelt Nunley.

Also the names of the children seem to be running through the families.

Obviously this information maybe already been known, if not may be help
to any one else with these family members.

In the 1920 Census Sarah H and John W are with Sarah's sister Rhoda Webber.
