S S Guards
« on: Wednesday 13 March 13 15:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi

On a marriage certificate of 1841 in Lambeth I have found the occupation of the  groom as "Sargent in the S.S. Guards"  can anyone shed some light onto what the S S Guards could have been, on the 1851 census he was a Chelsea Pensioner aged 39, I take it he was wounded in a war, any idea what war this might have been between 1841 and 1851.

many thanks
youwho

Enlistment was 'unlimited', ie for life. Men could be discharged to pension at any time 'no longer physically fit'. So it did not require a war. Of the remainder after about 21 years men were given a medical and most were discharged to pension then.

The rank was usually spelt serjeant in this period. So 'SS Guards' may be another mistake.

In the period in question, their title was the Scots Fusilier Guards (shortened to Scots Guards in 1877), so S F Guards maybe?
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

Sorry Alison, but that's just plain wrong despite what your husband says. Check Shaun's link to the Scots Guards Association.
1831-77 they are the Scots Fusilier Guards
