GILKES family in Barbados
« on: Saturday 16 March 13 16:07 GMT (UK) »
My paternal grandfather was known as Lamont GILKES but baptised/registered as Arthur Seth Laurant GILKES b 8Apr1905 d 2Jun1945 in St Michael, Barbados. He was a French teacher at Harrison College during the 1930s and played football for Spartan Club. He and his family lived in Hindsbury Road and his parent were Edward Stanley Gilkes, a tailor. dob etc not known and Christiana SMITH born 1860 I believe. This is where my trail ends. Does anyone have any knowledge of this family? There was a daughter, Millicent St John GILKES born 1886 but I know no more about her than that. The attached photo is of Edward Stanley with his son, my grandfather Lamont. Hope someone has some ideas.

Hi Chezzyp,

Welcome to Rootschat

Have you tried sending a copy of the photograph to a newspaper in Barbados to see if they got any response from relatives ?

Looking at the family search site - possible baptism for Christiana Smith - 15 August 1860

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FVLN-4JM

Baptism for Millicent :- https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FV25-2Z4

Hi Sandra,

No, I haven't tried the newspapers, thank you for the that. I did have the baptism info; in fact that's all i DO have bt I will certainly chase up the passenger list. I was told my grandfather went to France but that's all I knew. The passenger list may well be relevant. Thanks again.

Just incase you don't have access and haven't come across this -

Free access to Ancestry passenger lists through March 17.

http://www.ancestry.com/cs/us/passengerlists

Have tried a few different combinations of the name but didn't find any other passenger lists. Will give FindMyPast a try.

Hi Chezzyp,

Sorry haven't found any other passenger lists.

The Photograph and restoration board may be able to help you restore the photo if you are interested ? They do a fabulous job.  ;D

Cheers

I am French and just read your message dated 2013. My grand father was George Gilkes b. 1893 in Barbados d. 1926 in Martinique. He was a French teacher and played football. My father b. 1918 Stanley George Gilkes told me of his uncle Lamont who had two brothers gone to USA and a sister called Milicent. Could we be cousins?

Hello Giselle :)
I've only just seen this; haven't been on here much in the last year or so but I am very excited by the possibilities in your response to my post! We could very well be cousins!
My grandfather was known as Lamont, he too was a French teacher and played football for Spartan. The only sibling that I knew about was Millicent and there's nothing on her after her baptism (that Ive found anyway.)
My father didn't tell me a lot about his father, as he and my grandmother never married and my father never got over the fact that he was illegitimate.
Do you have a tree? Mine is on Ancestry under the title CPE .  Gosh, I'd love to know more about your Gilkes family.
