Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

Are you sure about this address?
I can only see a Westbourne Street, and Westbourne Place in Central London - and they are in the St George's Hanover Square district?

There is a Westbourne Road in Islington?

But nothing in the City of Westminster, where Pimlico resides.

I have this address on a marriage certificate for Arthur St. John Fry, aged 28 and Hannah Maria Nellist aged 25. It is in Pimlico and they got married at St George, Hanover Square. They both gave this address as residence at the time of marriage. I can't find Arthur St John Fry on any censuses at all and am at a loss how to proceed. My guess is that it was a boarding house and that the marriage was disapproved by his parents (father - John Fry, gentleman). Her father was Thomas Nellist, commercial traveller. Hannah had 2 children, a daughter, Evelyn, 4 years after the marriage (b. in Scissett) and a son Robert Arthur 11 years later (b. in Market Harborough). I have my doubts that they are Arthur's children.
I thought I might progress if I could find out something about the house they were living in. District 47 has Westbourne Rd house numbers 1 - 30 and District 48 numbers 65 - 90. No 55!!! I'm extremely frustrated on this!

Witnesses were R C Nellist and H Marsh. All the names were written in the same handwriting, which seems strange. I think R C must have been Robert Cottom (mother's maiden name), Hannah's brother (b.1849 Kirkstall, Yorks). The official at the Register Office was George Dyke (Deputy Registrar)

If you've ordered the certificate, then it may be that what you have received is in the handwriting of a modern staff member copying out the information rather than a facsimile of the original manuscript. Does that look possible?

Arthur S J M Fry, Lodger, Widow, 31, Wine Taster Wine & Spirit Trade, London

Actually viewing shows that there is a "mark" [looking liks a possible "t"]

Thanks for those comments.
Yes, I got the information from an ordered certificate. I didn't realize it wasn't a photo copy.
I will have a look at Arthur Fry, wine taster(!). It could be him.
Yes, Hannah went on to marry Jesse Grayson in 1887 in Chorlton (being 6 months pregnant with their first child) and lived with him at least till 1911. She died in 1931.
I think the only way to proceed is to send for Evelyn's birth certificate and see who the father is.
Thanks so much for your help.
Regards Tessa
