No you won't Ruskie!  Maybe I've just posted a boring subject! It doesn't take much to get me excited these days, I'm a bit of a saddo!

This thread has had over 300 viewings though so that's a good number. Maybe you were right about being the only one who has found such a nice inscription.  ;)

No such thing as a boring subject.  ;D

Hi all,

I found this one on the grave of my 3x gt uncle William Parker in St John's Graveyard (i think!), Newhall, Derbyshire.

William Parker
died March 4th 1871, aged 52

"Afflictions Sore, Long Time I bore,
Physicians were in vain,
Till Christ above , with tender love,
Did ease me of my pain."

Sarah Ann Parker, His widow,
died Aug 23rd, 1871
Aged 48

Not a lovely or nice one but a rather sad one really. William was a collier/miner by occupation although for the last 12 years of his life he ran a pub as a well. i don't as yet know the cause of his death, but the inscription suggests that he suffered with what ever it was for some time.

An interesting thread, hope many more add to it.

Kind regards

David

David, I would be very curious about William's cause of death. I think I'd have to buy that certificate to satisfy my curiosity.

Hi Ruskie,

I'm certainly curious about it myself, however, present financial constraints mean that i cannot afford to do anything at the moment. Although it is very near the top of the list of certificates to get! ;D

Kind regards

I think this headstone has a slightly unfinished look about it.
The inscription, while informative, doesn't provide much information for a Family Historian.
It's in one of our local churchyards.

I particularly like this inscription from one of our local churchyards. It's on the back of a headstone which records that the person commemorated died in 1792 at the age of 86. From the carvings above the inscription on the front of the headstone he was obviously a Blacksmith/Farrier.

     The inscription reads:-

My Anvil and Hammers lies declind
My Bellows have quite lost their wind
My Fires extinct, my Forge decay’d.
My Vice is in the Dust all laid.
My Coals is spent my Iron gone.
My Nails are drove my Work is done.
My Mortal part reſts nigh this stone
My Soul to Heaven I hope is gone.
