Cochranes in Lanirkshire
« on: Saturday 23 March 13 02:33 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone could tell me if the William Cochrane who died in WW1 5 Nov 1917 Seaforth Highlanders was the son of James Cochrane and Mary Ann nee Hastings. I have been onto various official sites War graves Memorials but none have the name of his parents. I believe he may be my grandfathers cousin, born in Coatbridge 1890. I think I found him aged 21 in the 1911 England Census. Thank you to anyone who could help

Hi Marilyn,

The Scottish National War Memorial site - http://www.snwm.org/website/frames.html gives that William's place of birth as Coatbridge.

William was actually born 11th September 1889 at 12 Dykes' Land, Coatbank Street, Coatbridge.

The database at Military-Genealogy.com also shows that he enlisted in Hamilton.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for the information, it does help a lot but I would still like to verify his parents as James Cochrane and Mary Anne nee Hastings and not sure how to go about it.   I think it sounds like him as he was 21 in the 1911 England Census. Thank you again for taking the time to reply, I do appreciate it

Hi ,

You could try posting on the the Armed Services board on RootsChat to see if anyone can find his
service record(only about 30% of the records exist).
Scotlandspeople also has Service Returns(deaths) for soldiers , that might name his parents  :-\     (3 showing for 1917 Minor Records , Service Returns)

His name is on the Coatbridge war memorial as a private in Seaforth Highlanders just as the 1911 census
