Ever so cold here so no gardening - a couple of coloured versions of my previous restores (many posts back!). I had to reduce them in size to fit.

A thank-you again from me for giving some vitality to another of my restores, GS.

I'm a lover of the B&Ws and sepias, I love to try to bring these old pics back to how perhaps they once looked when they were fresh and new. They can take a long time to do and I have to admit that having 'restored' one I get out of patience with the thought of then attempting to colour it. But to see a restore beautifully coloured as by GS with mine and those of Gadget and Carol it certainly does give a wonderful glimpse of how these wonderful people would have looked as they posed for their portraits.

I must admit, Maggie, that I was originally a purist in that I didn't like to see colourisations of old photos because I felt the original integrity of the image should be retained.  However over the years I have changed my views.  I think that the restores themselves should try to uphold that original image.  However, colourisations can be helpful in bringing a picture to life and help us to appreciate what the photographer might have seen on the day the photo was taken.  So I suppose you could say that colourisations are an individual's interpretation of the image; whilst the restorer is trying to restore the image as close as possible to its original state.

To combine the patience and attention to detail of the Purist Restorer with the artistic flair of the Colourist ought to produce remarkable results as two skills come together. Of course there are many on the board who can combine both talents and do so with remarkable results. But at the moment I'm not one of them, so I thank GS for vitalising my efforts at restoring the original.
