Have Death Register now looking for burial info
« on: Thursday 28 March 13 01:19 GMT (UK) »
I have the death record of my Great Grandmother.  She died in 1914 in Hawick.  How do I go about find out where she is buried.

Also on the death register on the second last column it reads as follows " Signature & Qualifications of Informant, and Residence, if out of the House in which the Death occurred"  Is the residence mentioned the residence of the Informant or the deceased individual?

Thanks to all for any help.

 :) :)

The column you mention relates to the informant's details, so if an address is given, it will be the informant's address.

The residence of the deceased is included in column 2, along with time and place/address of death. If someone died in a hospital for example, this would be shown here and also included would be 'usual address .....'.

Thanks Monica that's what I thought.  I just received an email from Hawick indicating that the lairholder was her son who was also the informant. His address on the email (Hawick) matches the address of his mother but does not match the address given as the informant's address (Carstairs) on the death register.  I was told in another forum that the address in Carstairs was a tenement while the address in Harwick is rather nice at least to-day its nice.  Any ideas?  Could the informant's address be wrong or did the informant move into the Hawick address after the death.  Thanks for any input I'm kinda new at this.  :-))

Hi David

You can only really ever go with you are finding on documents. Hard to comment properly without seeing what you are seeing, however, the address for the informant is what they gave themselves to the registrar.

Hi  terianne,

Actually I received the burial information from scotborders.gov.uk.  Here's the info they gave me.
WELLOGATE - BURGHAL SECTION - LAIR NO. 2175 for MARGARET FORREST 31May1914.  The lairholder was her son William Goodfellow.  I just would like to know approximately where the site is as I've been told the cemetery is rather large.  Is it possible to get a map of the cemetery?  Thanks :)
