Sullivan family - Monaghan.

Hi everyone.

My maternal great grandfather JAMES SULLIVAN (Born 1879) married a woman named ELLEN (Born 1881). James was definitely born in Monaghan but I can't be sure about Ellen yet and I don't know what her maiden name was but I think they married around 1905 and went on to have three children, MARY (Born 1906), JOHN (Born 1908) and ALICE (Born 1912). In 1911 (according to the census) James, Ellen and two of the children were living in Number 3 GAS HOUSE ENTRY in MONAGHAN URBAN. They had a boarder named JAMES MCCOURT (Born 1881).

One of the siblings (John) was my grandfather, when he grew up he moved to Belfast and married a lady named Bridget McAree (My grandmother), I believe that her father was also originally from Monaghan. They went on to have children and lived in West Belfast. My mummy Bridget Sullivan (Married name - Connor) was their daughter.

I think my great grandfather's middle name was Joseph, so his full name was James Joseph Sullivan and the middle name of his third child Alice, was Ann, so Alice Ann Sullivan.

This is a long shot I know, but does any of what I've written mean anything to anyone or does anyone have any advice or useful resources or places/sites I could search for information? It would be very much appreciated.

1911 census for reference :

  Sullivan household

James born 'Monaghan, Co. Monaghan' so in the county town, wife and two children all born 'Co. Monaghan'. James and Ellen say they are married 6 years, so c1905.

The best place to start would probably with the birth for one of the children to establish Ellen's maiden name, as this would make the marriage search for James and Ellen easier, and also make it easy to rule in or out any possible marriage matches based on the the BMD Index.

The child with the least common name would be Alice, and a search shows just one likely match :

Her maiden name being M'Court would actually make sense because on the census of 1911, the family have listed a boarder by the name of James McCourt, could have been her brother. Ummm! Thanks for the help.

Hi folks, I have Sullivan ancestors born in Co Monaghan I was hoping to pin down a Townland for them. I wonder if the following info means anything to anyone.. the details are as follows -

James Sullivan born Abt 1811 Antrim

1st wife?  Ann Galbraith
son - Bernard Sullivan born Abt 1831

2nd wife Mary Sullivan? born Co Monaghan (maiden name possibly Small?)
children all born in Co Monaghan
Ann Abt 1826
James Abt 1833
Mary Abt 1835
Alice Elizabeth Abt 1836
John Abt 1841
Family moved to Scotland around 1849-51 where I have records from 1851 Census onwards
I know the above dates are sketchy but it's all i have to go on.

I see some these posts are several years ago but...
I live Cootehill Cavan
There are few families Sullivans in next County Monaghan 5KM away
Quite a few in area called Latton Co Monaghan 
There is Latton historical society on face book try them Catriona Lennon is involved in that group she may be able help.
If you contact Clones Co Monaghan library Catriona Lennon is involved with library too
Also there is one main Monaghan paper The Northern Standard send letter or email them
Lots people doing their family tree do that.
