Hi Perri

Do you know the name of his parents?  Perhaps this is him, christened 1810, son of Benjamin GRAY & Martha.

If it is, this christening date may be a close as you can get to a birthdate - there were no certificates back then. The original OPR baptism could contain a birthdate, but it's not assured.

When did he arrive in Australia, do you know?

Cheers

This could be his marriage in 1836 -

Hi Perri

As per my first reply, there may be no record in UK  that state his actual dob - have you seen the orginal baptism record?  (No dob has been transcribed onto Family Search baptism, so I'm doubtful there would be anything more on the original OPR).

You asked for "any  information" - it's not clear what 'any' entails  :) so  before we go off spending time looking for stuff you already have - do you have his parents marriage, his siblings names/baptisms, his parents in census and so on?

Kind regards

Hi Ambly, Thanks for info on baptism I was hoping there might have been some records in Australia regarding his birthday celebrations or similar reported in a newspaper or something similar if possible. I think I have a handle on his family but I need the actual birthdate for historical reasons for a friends efforts to get a plaque commemorating B Gray.

Hi Perri

Ahhh - now I see:   I just googled Littlehampton Australia......

"Littlehampton is a small town in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia. At the 2006 census, Littlehampton had a population of 2,064. Littlehampton was laid out in 1849 by Benjamin Gray who named it after his native town in Sussex"  ;D

"...named by the surveyor Benjamin Gray (in 1836) after his home town in Sussex, England"

He was also a JP and died in 1879 Blakiston?
Buried in St James Cemetery, Blakiston

Have you already researched his Headstone - maybe the MI has his full dob?

Cheers

Thumbnail of his Headstone there -and you can request a free image to be sent.
By his age at death at least it's appears he was baptised close to the time of his birth (and not baptised as an older child, as can happen!)

I would ask a Moderator  to move this topic to the Australia Board. A lot of Australia experts there who may know if digging into such things as his records of being made a JP or land & property purchase etc may exist and if his dob should  have been recorded on any thing like that.

Cheers
