John Mow
« on: Monday 01 April 13 13:05 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the spouse of John Mow. According to IGI he married on 1st April 1753 at Chirnside but his spouse isn't named. Please could anyone possibly do a lookup for me, assuming the records still exist. To be honest I'm not terribly hopefully of the records having survived that far back. I have checked Scotland's People and there is a reference on there to him having made a payment on that date but it doesn't confirm that it was anything to do with a marriage.

Many thanks

Hi

That info is only available on Scotlands People which is a pay per view website - not a subscription site (unfortunately)

You would have to buy credits to view the entry

It is shown under the marriage section of the OPR's so must have had something to so with a marriage

Thanks Carole, yes, I've already checked that and have viewed the transcription but having done so I'm none the wiser unfortunately, it's really not clear what that money was about, but as you say it appears under the marriage tab on the site. I wondered whether the actual marriage details had survived.

Just a possibility - but ......  if you know the names of any of their children etc - SP/IGI could be checked to see if mothers name and maiden name is shown

BG, why are you researching this John Mow? Maybe some more info on him would help you further.

There are these slightly later birth entries showing for a John MOW and a Margaret CROW:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XY3W-6WL
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTYG-PDZ

There are also other entries in Chirnside with just father's name (one of those where the clerk registered entries this way which is always a pity).

Do you want to post the image for the 1753 record here, or at least your transcription? There are no doubt several people on this forum who might be able to interpret it for you.

There are several baptisms for children of John Mow on FamilySearch from 1754 but unfortunately they don't name the mother either, which means the OPR entry on ScotlandsPeople us unlikely to do so either. Not helpful is it?

Thanks Monica & Carole. I'll try and post the transcription as soon as I've worked out how to do it.

I know that he had a daughter who was baptized just over 9 months after the marriage -  Mary 18th Feb 1754, but as you've identified though, it's only dad that's been named again, so as you say I'm no further forward.

I think his wife may have been Jean Brown as I've come across a Will naming Mary Mow as a beneficiary and described as being this persons niece.

I know that he married a second time in 1764 then had two sons, but it's his first wife I'm especially interested in.

There is this though that might help a little  http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/molle-george-james-2465

Looks to be the same as this one mentioned earlier https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTYG-PDZ

Thanks Monica, yes I'd seen both of these, but sadly no clues as to who his first wife was - boo hoo!!
