Hi all

I have been told this lady is an ancestor who was married in Ireland in the 1860's. Could someone please verify this and do a clean up if possible. I do not have the original so can't scan it as is required. I am totally reliant on your expertise.

Thanks Wiggy hobbes. It is a photo I was given a few years ago. I think it may have been a reproduction of the original. It looks to me as if someone has had a go at colouring the original.

Hmmmm....well, hard to tell what kind of image it is. Obviously not a photo.

However, I would say this is not an image of someone married in the 1860s. The style of the portrait, which is a vignette, was not popular during the 1860s. The hairstyle is wrong, and what we can see of the lady's blouse is way wrong.

If the image started life as a drawing, the style might be fine for the 1860s. But the hair and neckline are still problematic

If I were shown this image without comment, I would have said maybe an overpainted portrait from just before the war.

My opinion, and you may get others

Must say China - I was going to say it doesn't look at all like 1860s to me - I was thinking much later than that! - but was scared to say so without your expert knowledge.

Don't laugh, but it looks to me like the head was cut from a photo and someone has drawn in the blouse. Maybe it was a locket photo and they decided to create a full photo. Maybe I should go and clean my glasses!

Orkrad - not having a go at your rellies really - but some of these images are very interesting and turn out to be not what you think - I have just such a one in my family! I was devastated!!
