Christopher Gascoigne 22nd Northumberland Fusiliers
« on: Thursday 04 April 13 08:25 BST (UK) »
Can anyone shed please shed any  light on my wifes grandfather
We know is that he died on the first day of the battle of the Somme
Military No. 22/986

He was a miner before the war. But I suspect he was probably killed by machine gun fire at La Boiselle
on that tragic day.

The 22nd Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers in WW1, was also know as the 3rd Battalion of the Tyneside Scottish. Recruitment to the Tyneside Scottish ( 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd Bns) was aimed at Scots or descendants of Scots, from Tyneside area.

Similarly the 24th-27th Bns of the NF were termed Tyneside Irish.

Author John Sheen wrote detailed books on the individual soldiers and actions of the above battalions.
i.e. "Tyneside Irish" and "Tyneside Scottish".

A Maud Atkins and Christopher Gascoigne were married at St John's, Killingworth in 1899.

Many thanks for your very swift responses :)
He was born approx 1882 in Killingworth/Burradon and married Harriet Robson in 1900.
Had 9 children before enlisting...
I'm hoping to find out something/anything  about his military life or the timelines of how the 22nd were engaged in the war
e.g. was he a miner or infantry , how he died etc
Does anyone have a copy of the Sheen book and could see if hes mentioned

Many thanks

Hi Trini
Many thanks for the offer, much appreciated.
However someone did get there before you :)
He is listed as 'fallen 1 July 1916, missing Oct 26'
But there is no other information about him unfortunately

Once again, thankyou ...  This really is a great forum with lots of people volunteering their
time and energy to help others

Hi Dave
Good to hear from you..  Christopher was my wifes grandfather. Her father was William (Bill) born in 1913 in Morpeth.  Bill and his family lived in Sth Elmsall where he was a miner.   I've visited the Thiepval monument on the Somme where Christophers name is engraved in the stone in a very prominent position.
