Identify soldiers regiment please

I realise that I may be asking the impossible here, but would love some help with identifying this soldier's regiment.  I understand that it is from WW1 which is why I have posted here, but am interested to know more about him.

For starters, I see that he has medal ribbons, but do not know what they are, so that would help me.  Would they have been issued during the war  or later?

I can also make out something on his left sleeve, but realise that it may be difficult to identify from the angle.

The soldier and sailor are completely unknown to my family, so any help would be much appreciated.

Good evening,

This is post WW1, he is wearing the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. I can't make out what the shoulder titles are but some of our other experts will be along at some time with their thoughts.
