Balshaw, Goore, or Gore of Lancashire
« on: Saturday 06 April 13 18:36 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for information on the families Balshaw and Goore (or Gore) from the area around Ormskirk in Lancashire (and also have some information I'd be willing to share on these families).  I've traced one line of Balshaws back to about 1713 but haven't been able to get further, partly because so many of them had the same given names.  And I'm having less luck with Goores, who married into the Balshaw family and seem to have had an enduring connection with them.  Any information on these families and the connections between them would be appreciated!

Cheers.
BALSHAW, GOORE or GORE, UNDERWOOD in Lancashire;
MORLEY in Wyresdale and Liverpool;
KINSEY in Liverpool and Cheshire

Many thanks, Roger.  There's much to browse through there.

Are you connected with these families?

Regards,

Jane

Thanks, Roger.  No joy on finding other parish registers in the area that are available to read online (I've checked Lydiate, Aughton, Sefton, Formby), but the links are nevertheless a great resource.  I really appreciate your help.

And Radcliff, many thanks for your responses, too.  My male Balshaws are mainly Williams, Thomases, and Johns.  They do seem to have used the same given names over many generations.  One of my Williams married Anne Goore at Altcar in 1777.

Does anyone know anything about Goore Balshaw?  He was the son of William and Anne and appears to have been convicted of manslaughter in 1809--yet sentenced only to six months in prison.  I'm trying to discover the story of this crime and the reason his sentence was so light.
