Help - Gislingham Marriage 1830 Hannah Land & Nathan Walton
« on: Friday 12 April 13 18:40 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm new to this site and have been researching my husband's ancestors - he's a Walton and over the last few years i've been able to uncover lots of info about the Walton's going back to 1715. Nathan Walton born @ 1803 in Hopton Suffolk was his gg grandfather. He married Hannah Land in Gislingham on the 8 May 1830 (according to England & Wales marriage records). Hannah, according to census records was born in blo norton norfolk about 1811 but i've not been able to find any evidence to support this altho' there were many land's born there in the 1800's.
I wondered if anyone had any access to Gislingham marriages which might give me a pointer to her parents.
Any help would be much appreciated

Hi Pabeck,

A very warm welcome to Rootschat. I'm sure you will find some very helpful people here as I have.

I don't have much info for you re. marriages or baptisms, but I have found two burials which if you don't already have, may be of use;

17-12-1863 Natham Walton of Norton, age 63, Died 16 Dec, buried Norton St.Andrew.

17-12-1863 Hannah Walton of Norton, age 54, Died 15 Dec, w/o Nathan, buried Norton St.Andrew.

These entries have been taken from the Suffolk Burial Index CD as issued by the Suffolk Family History Society and with their permission.

Yes they died within a day of each other and but buried the same date.

Hope these help your research.

Hi and welcome

Fathers names were not recorded on marriage certs before the start of registration in 1837, however they could have been witnesses.

There is this baptism in familysearch though

Hannah Land bapt. 12 Jul 1809   Gisleham, Suffolk, England. Father: Samuel,  mother Sarah Soloman.

Hi Pabeck,

Just to followup on your note about Hannah being born in Blo Norton, Norfolk.

Are you aware that most of the original Norfolk registers are available on line  to view?

I have found Anne d/o of William & Sarah Land born 26-8-1806, bapt. 31-8-1806 .

If you go to this address you can view the original entry;

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-12426-57807-94?cc=1416598&wc=MMVP-S7P:339085758

Anne & Hannah were , as far I know interchangeable names.

But the entry that Claire has found might be the correct one.

Just a word of caution - Gisleham is near Lowestoft & is not the same as Gislingham, which is in Mid Suffolk.  Blo Norton, Nfk is much closer to Gislingham.

It is Nathan that came from Blo Norton

From the Suffolk Marriage Index
Nathan WALTON of Blo Norton, Norfolk married Hannah LAND 8 May 1830, Gislingham.

Of course he may not have been born there just living there at the time of his marriage.

K

ps.  Of course she could have come from Blo Norton too & have been living/working in Gislingham at the time of their marriage.

Hi
Thanks Alan, Claire & K for your welcome & replies.
Thanks Alan for the burial dates of Nathan & Hannah - I have the copy death certificates for both but didn't know about the burials.
My problem is that marriages between Land & Walton were quite common (Nathan's mother was Sarah Land!).
As you all say altho' father's names were not  recorded before 1837 I was hoping that witnesses might give a clue.
I think that Hannah may have been born in Gislingham but it could have been between 1803 & 1811 as her age varies on census, death & burial.

Hello again Gill

Looking at the Suffolk burial Index - Land burials seem to start in Gislingham in 1848 (unless nothing earlier than that was transcribed) with the children of a John & Emily Land.  The couple had at least 5 children bpt in Gislingham 3 of whom died very young.

John LAND married Emily WELLS DecQ 1841 Hartismere ref: 13/1003
Emily LAND was buried 6 Jan 1849 age 36, Gislingham.

Looks like John married again in DecQ 1848 Maria WATLING
The couple had 6 children bpt Gislingham & Stoke Ash they named one child Hannah (1857).

A John Land (abode Finningham) was buried 28 May  1877 age 63, Gislingham.
Maria Land was buried 22 Jun 1875 age 57, Gislingham.

Can you tell from the CRs where this John was born?  He is about the right age that he could have been Hannah's brother, his presence in Gislingham & naming a child Hannah could link them.

Of course you could get a copy of one of John Land's marriage certs - it would give his fathers name.

Hi K
Many thanks for your further help, I'll certainly follow up on that one.
As you say the names may indicate a link.
Despite the fact that the census records have always shown that Hannah was born in Blo Norton I've never been able to find anyone who fits the bill.
Hannah & Nathan had a son John born 1837 so again maybe a link.

Thanks again

Gill
