Craney (or Creaney)
« on: Wednesday 08 June 05 12:22 BST (UK) »
Looking for some info on my grandfather & hopefully earlier generations. He was Alfred Craney (name changed later on to Creaney), came from the parish of Grange near Loughgall. His marriage certificate in 1906 shows his age as 24 so born about 1882. Records office can't turn up a birth cetificate, his marriage certificate shows his father as William Craney, occupation Cook. He died in 1928 and is buried at St Aiden at the Grange. Has anybody any ideas where I can get a lead.

Hiya creaney,

I looked at http://failtefomhat.com Griffiths Valuations  for the name Craney .. there were three in Co. Armagh and three families by the name of Cranny. Since the name was changed to Creaney I wonder if there might have been a change from a slightly different spelling to Craney?

All the Best, Chris

Thanks Christoper..... first reply on this one in over a year. I have done the Griffiths, the Church records, the census and every website known to man. I have accumulated a fair number of possible connections & and been working on a healthy lead for several months, nothing definite yet but I live in hope. Would still be interested in sightings in or around Armagh area & thanks for your reply.

I know this is a 15 year old post, with a user account probably no longer active, but I've previously came across a record mentioning Alfred Craney, Grandson as being the reporter of the death of Mary Craney in 3 Dec 1899, Mullinasilla, Armagh (my main contender for an ancestor on one of my lines - she's in the valuation revision books there, being listed after John Craney her husband dies). I did previously look for marriage records for William Craney (Alfred's father) to try and confirm his ancestry, but couldn't find anything.

Here's the townland of Mullanasilla just west of Richhill.

Thanks for the welcomes, yes I've found that Townlands.ie site very useful for finding locations previously, spelling varies so much!
