My great-grandfather Joseph Magee is shown in the 1891 Census as a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery and in resident in or on the horse sands fort Which I have learnt is in the Solent. On his marriage certificate of 1894 his address is shown as Cambridge barracks Portsmouth, does anyone know how long solders would be expected man is island forts in the Solent.
