Translation of Joseph Scheyer's birth entry by the French authorities.

Seems that a lot of records for the area haven't been digitised. Had better luck looking in the Metz Archives rather than the Moselle Archives. Fèves seems to have been attached to the Maizières-lès-Metz commune - their records have not been digitised yet.

You have been a massive help!

I am curious about the first record you found - German?

I've pushed all this info into Ancestry and it found Madeleine's passing as above.... however for Louis's father its come up with a hint (yeah, I never take these at face value...) for a German marriage record between Nikolaus Scheuer and Maria Nicolas (no date given).  It does show a scanned document but as I dont have the full beans subscription, it wont let me access the document in full.

With the birth cert you posted before and that hint, does that suggest that Joseph Scheyer has roots to Germany via his grand parents?

The area went between German and French rule, hence at different periods the records are in German or French. It's a little complicated to explain, so here's a wikipedia explanation.

This might help in the hunt to track the family down. Unfortunately, a lot of the Paris records were destroyed in a fire.

It seems that Louis Mathias and his brother were deported to Dachau Concentration Camp and Louis Mathias died there on 21 April 1944 at the age of 55. There are two stories for the deportation:
1. They refused to join the German Army (it was obligatory in the area after the occupation; or

2.  They wanted to set up a General Confederation of Labour union (communist).

Am I reading this correct, Nicolas Scheyer has 4 siblings, Jules, Jean, Louis and H Léon, and it as Louis and H Léon which were deported to the concentration camp?
