CHARLOTTE JONES nee JENKS
« on: Thursday 18 April 13 00:40 BST (UK) »
Can anyone out there help with information about a Charlotte Jenks who married Richard Jones in 1849.He was a blacksmith and they are on the 1851 and 1861 census living at woodside in llanbadarn fynydd with a growing family. She disappears after that so probably died between 1861 1871.
I cannot find a birth or a burial for her no matter what spelling I use. I am also trying to trace back the christian name Ophelia which seems to run in my family. The 1851 census is the earliest entry so far
I am grateful for any help as I'm new to family history but very addicted.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, having great difficulty with her birth, but her death looks to be:-

Charlotte Jones March qtr 1870 Knighton 11b 137 aged 47

Their is also an earlier possible marriage for Richard and Charlotte:-
Richard Jones to (on same page) Charlotte Price Dec qtr 1842 Knighton v 26 page 347, this marriage is closer to the first birth recorded on the 1851 of an Anne Jones b c 1844, but yours appears to be not in 1849, but Sept qtr 1845 Newport S v 18 page 147 Richard Jones to (on same page) Charlotte Jenks? (So was the Jenks maiden name obtained from one of the children's birth certificates)?
Census ref for 1851 HO107/2493/369/3

Thanks for replying.I'm amazed that you found out anything so quickly as I seem to spend my life trawling the internet family sites with little success. The reason I thought it was Charlotte Jenks was because I seem to remember( my notes are in a mess) that the father timothy jones was on the marriage certificate. I only  do research at the library so I can't quickly look this back up right now.
Timothy Jones is the blacksmith from Dolfar on this chat site
Look forward to hearing from you as you seem to like a challenge

Hi Barbara and hopefully some kind soul, who will confirm these relationships/census refs taken from the listing of all those shown on the Dec qtr1842 marriages in Knighton:-

Mary Hamer married Edward Lloyd HO107/2493/400/5
Margaret Williams married David Morgans HO107/2493/406/16
Martha Lewis married Thomas Morgans HO107/2493/387/3

Which leaves Charlotte Price marrying Richard Jones HO107/2493/359/3

Martha Lewis married Thomas Morgans HO107/2493/387/3

Edward Lloyd is 53, Mary is 48, they have children aged 21 to 7
at Llanbadarn Fynydd

David Morgans is 32, Margaret is 30, they have children aged 10 to 1
Also at Llanbadarn Fynydd

Thomas Morgans is 40, Martha is 53, children with Lewis and Morgans surnames.

Can't find that last reference?

Thank you so much for the information which I had so much trouble finding.I am new to this game and have only been doing it for about 3-4 months. I use the facilities at the library as I don't have a subscription to a genealogy site. I am still floundering my way around ancestry and find my past and I was wondering if you could tell me how you located richard and charlotte. Where did you pick up the records?
I hope to hear from you soon

We (or me anyway!) use FreeBMD to try to find births, marriages and deaths.
Coverage isn't 100% - it tends to be sporadic as you get to the 1960's, but it is an excellent resource.

FamilySearch is also very good - don't register, just click on "Search".

FreeCEN is a sister site to FreeBMD, although I tend to use Ancestry or FindMyPast for census, and other, data.
FreeREG is another sister site, for Parish Registers - but do check their coverage before using.

Check with your library whether it has the Library Edition of Ancestry and/or FindMyPast - you would then be able to use them for no cost!

With marriages, there were either 2 or 4 marriages per page - so either 4 or 8 names per page.
So, Keyboard found the 8 names
Their is also an earlier possible marriage for Richard and Charlotte:-
Richard Jones to (on same page) Charlotte Price Dec qtr 1842 Knighton v 26 page 347

And then we just had to use census data to try to work out which bride married which groom! ;D

Thanks for you prompt reply.I do use the free ancestry and FindMyPast in the library but as I am a learner I am probably not using it right.I seem to come up with a couple of hundred potential people and it takes me ages to whittle them down.I don't know how I thought Charlotte Jenks was the right one ,I am off to the library now to look at how you found the right one and how I latched onto the wrong one!
bye
