Poor Law records c1836 St Botolph without Bishopsgate
« on: Thursday 18 April 13 21:24 BST (UK) »
Hello

My GG Grandmother Susanna(h) Elizabeth Brooks, was baptised in St Botolph without Bishopsgate on 6 May 1836 and her parents, Martin and Maria's address is listed as Workhouse. Does anyone know which one this would be?

In 1835 Martin and Maria's address was listed as Motley Street for the baptism of their daughter Mary Ann at St Leonards, Shoreditch on 8 Feb 1835, so they must've been admitted to the workhouse sometime between then and Susannah's baptism.

Martin in the 1841 census was registered as being at the Bethnal Green Lunatic Asylum.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

hi Nigel
Have you seen the burial for Martin Brooks age 40 28.12 1847 at St Matthews Bethnal Green-address the Mad House?
I'd assume they went to the Bethnal Green Workhouse. However looking at the Ancestry records ,no records for this period have survived for Bethnal Green. The ones for the City Of London seem to start from 1838 but there is no index.
If you haven't already got it the couple  married at St Martin Ludgate
Martin Brooks  bach this parish and Maria Kates of St Ann Blackfriars spinster. He signed and she made her mark.Wit Joseph Potter and John  Dixon

Thanks Valda and Cidderdrinker for your replies, looks like I won't find the information I am looking for.

Martin according to the 1841 census was in the Bethnal Green lunatic asylum, but luckily the rest of the family were living in Holywell lane.

Thanks again for your help
