US Naturalisation Card

Can anyone help me re the following?

I located an ancestor's Naturalisation Card on the LDS site.  On the front it has the usual details - Name, address, dob, witnesses, etc.

On the back of the card it reads as follows:

Other facts of record:

D-I  January 13 1897

Supreme Court, 1st Judicial District, City and County, State of New York.

I have looked at other applications and the rear of the card in many cases has no information listed.  In some, there is a reference to a change of name. 

Can anyone explain the "fact of record" in my rellie's case?

"D-I" = probably declaration of intention, the paperwork that you filled out a couple years before the naturalisation itself.

When/where was he naturalised? It could have been noted because he filed declaration and final petition in different courts (e.g. he had moved in the intervening period) and they needed to cross-reference.

Date of Naturalisation 3/20/1905 in Chicago, Illinois.

D-I Jan 13 1897 Supreme Court, 1st Judicial District, City and County, State of New York.

As you can see, there is a difference of 8 years between the two dates.  I was not aware that my rellie ever lived in New York.

Do you know when he came into the country?

8 years is quite long if that is between declaration of intention and naturalisation - normally it would be something like resident two years, declaration, wait three years, naturalisation (think there were some exceptions, i.e. those with military service).

I have only the sketchiest facts about this man.  According to the Naturalisation Card his date of arrival in the US was 10/15/92, which I wasn't aware of.  He seems to have made a declaration of intent on Jan 13 1897 in New York.  I also was not aware that he ever lived there.  He was granted Naturalisation in Chicago, the place I had associated him with.  There could have been some service with the US Navy intervening, when did the Spanish-American War come to an end?

Spanish-American War lasted from Apr. to Aug. 1898.

If you give us his name, we may be able to find something further on his time in New York.
