Sergeant Ready 1839
« on: Monday 22 April 13 17:03 BST (UK) »
Hi,

A strange request but I like a bit of back story. I am researching a convict ancestor who was transported to Australia for stealing a sum of money from a Sergeant Ready, he was tried in Limerick in 1839. It was his first offense. My ancestor was described as a pedlar on some convict records and a shoemaker on others.

What I found interesting is that most convicts stole a pound or two and were repeat offenders. Not so my fellow. He went all out and stole only the once but took 11 pounds and 5 shillings.

I just was wondering who Sergeant Ready was, to have such a large sum of money in 1839.

Cheers

Hi,
His name was Michael Wallace and he was transported to NSW and then onto Tasmania.
I have details of him once he arrives in Australia as our convict records are very good and available
But was fascinated by the theft of money as most as I said were for much smaller amounts.
Thanks
