Black and white restoration please

Hi talented folk,

Please if anyone has the time could this photo which looks to me as if it has a little water damage, be restored to its former glory please.

I only have a scanned copy for you to work from sadly but any improvement would be a bonus.

Oh dear, it's very badly pixelated. Does the scanned copy you have look like this or have you had to reduce/compress it to post on here?

If this is all you have, I'll have a go but would prefer less of the  checkerboard effect

I'll see what I can do for you.  I might have to put some slight texture/grain on it once it's smoothed out, otherwise it might look too flat.
