Margerrison family - Ashover
« on: Thursday 02 May 13 15:41 BST (UK) »
I am researching a branch of the Margerrison family and in 1841 have a John Margerrison (b. +/- 1789) with wife Elizabeth & 4 children - Eliza (25), Sarah (15), Joseph (14) & James (10) living in Crich parish.  On 1851 census John & Elizabeth Margerrison with 2 daughters Eliza & Sarah living in Tansley.  John Margerrison was born in Ashover.
1. Can anyone locate the marriage of John & Elizabeth  around 1812 (I believe there was another daughter Mary born in 1813).
2. Also can we verify the baptisms of their children - possibly Mary (1813), Eliza (1816), William (1820), Sarah (1826), Joseph (1828) & James (1830).  Any help is appreciated

Is it possible that they married in Mansfield, Notts?

From Nottinghamshire Index's

John Margerison married Elizabeth Parker, 25/02/1811, St Peter and St Paul, Mansfield.

There are two possible Margerison baptisms -

John 15/05/1811 son of John and Elizabeth, St Peter and St Paul, Mansfield.
Mary 27/04/1812 daughter of John and Elizabeth, same church.

Thank you Willsmum, you're a star!  On the 1851 census Elizabeth's place of birth was Mansfield, Notts.  Obviously they married in Mansfield, had 2 children in Mansfield and then moved back to Derbyshire and had more children - I would still like to verify the baptisms of their other children - does anyone have access to Ashover parish records?
Are the Nottinghamshire index's available online - I would like to have documentary evidence to verify this marriage as well as the baptisms of John & Mary.
Once again, thanks to Willsmum.

Hi

I have Ashover PR's on CD, but there is nothing for your family I'm afraid.

The only baptism is a Samuel Margerrison in 1835 to Joseph & Mary, occupation Slater.

I am still trying to verify the births/baptisms of the following Margerrison children born to John Margerrison & Elizabeth Parker who had married in Mansfield, Notts in 1811 - they had their first 2 children in Mansfield (John - 1811 & Mary - 1812).  According to my research of census records etc they went on to have 5 more children -
1. Eliza (aged 35 on 1851 census - born Matlock) - buried 3 Mar 1870 in Tansley age 55 (b. +/- 1815)
2. William (not found on any census) - buried 29 Jan 1880 in Tansley age 59 (b.+/- 1821)
3. Sarah (aged 25 on 1851 census - born Tansley)- buried 2 Apr 1883 in Tansley age 58 (b.+/- 1825)
4. Joseph (aged 23 on 1851 census- born Lumsdale) died 1875 Shardlow district age 48 (b.+/- 1827)
5. James (aged 30 on 1861 census - born Crich) - died 1901 Chesterfield district age 71 (b.+/- 1830

Can anyone help me find their baptisms?  Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, I see you are researching Margerrison.  I am in Australia and I have a Margerrison family bible. I found this in my mother-in-law's house when she passed away.  It was given to her after the death of her friend Edith Jay in 1935.  Edith's maiden name was Margerrison. If you are interested in this bible please contact me.  I have pics of the register pages of the bible and the gravestone for James Margerrison, his wife Hannah (nee England) and Edith.  It appears that there was also a brother William killed in France in WWI 1917.
