Sarah Eustace - born in Saunderton Workhouse
« on: Monday 06 May 13 14:50 BST (UK) »
I am trying to research my great great grandmother Sarah Eustace, she married John Lawrence in 1872 in Wycombe. Her brother Henry Eustus was a witness and her father was listed as James Eustus. I can't make out the occupation, it starts with an F. I also purchased her birth certificate which stated she was born on 25 July 1855 in the Wycombe Union Workhouse, Saunderton. Her mother was Elizabeth Eustace, lace maker; no father is mentioned on the certificate.

I am wondering if Elizabeth took the name of Eustace and lived with this James Eustace as his wife. In 1856 Elizabeth married Henry Folly and in the 1861 census it shows Sarah and Henry as Follys and there is Ann East, mother-in-law living with them. I am presuming this is Elizabeth's widowed mother. Sarah, Henry, Elizabeth and Ann were all listed as born in Saunderton. In the 1871 census Henry is again named as Eustace.

Can anyone shed any light on James Eustace or Elizabeth East/Eustace/Folly.

I would be very grateful for any help, thank you all for your wonderful help in the past.

Ann  :) :D

Hi

Did the birth certificate give a maiden name for her mother.

ADDED
The marriage certificate of Elizabeth to Henry Folly should show if she was previously married.

The 1861 image clearly shows Ann's surname as East.  However - somebody called CDHilton has notified a correction to that entry in April saying that the surname is Eustace

If it wasn't you who made the correction - it may be worth your while contacting CDHilton in case there is a connection

Sarah's birth certificate only stated that her mother was Elizabeth Eustace; it didn't say whether that was her maiden name or not.

The suggestion that Ann was named Eustace was supposition on cdhilton's part. So unfortunately there is no lead there.

Thank you for all your ideas and effort in this. It always helps to have ideas from others.

My feeling is that probably Elizabeth was single (marriage cert to Folly will help confirm, as Rosie has said), and that when Sarah married she made up a father for her marriage cert.

Elizabeths mother may well have remarried to a Mr East at some time.

Thanks for all your help.

It is quite possible that James was a fictitious father; the only thing is that Elizabeth had a son Henry Eustace as well as Sarah, which makes me doubt it.

As you say Elizabeth's mother could have remarried a Mr East. I will buy Elizabeth and Henry Folly's marriage cert to see if it says anything.

Thanks again
