James Dodson's (convict) family in London Dodson/Gossage

James Dodson, born 1824, Ratcliffe, London was sentenced with transportation to Tasmania in 1839. He was 16 accused of stealing a role of carpet.

We don't know who his parents are but thinking he may belong to family of John Dodson/Pheobe Gossage (1798-1873) She had seven children to J D then 4 children to Arthur Christian. We wish to find John Dodson's death, he was a "hairdresser" on the baptism of children.

We don't know how to prove our James Dodson belongs to this family ... any clues.

christened 4th april 1824 at St Dunstan church ,Stepney,Middlesex ....
so although christened in Stepney 8 months after his birth - he MAY have been born in Ratcliffe ??
but born 1823 - not 1824

Just noticed - b 1824 - sentenced aged 16 in 1839 .....if he was 16 in 1839 - he would have been born 1823 wouldn`t he ??

Arthur and Phoebe have a child b 1842 christened in St Dunstans,Stepney - so Phoebe is still there in Stepney
freebmd has no death for a John Dodson 1837 - 1842 in Stepney
Maria Dodson christened  1st dec 1834 - (st dunstan )Stepney, Middlesex , looks to be the last born of John /Phoebe Dodson

so logically - John Dodson died between 1834 and 1837 - presumably in Stepney ? or at least in Middlesex ...

Sometimes death certificates and death notices can help with info.

The James Dodson in our family married in Australia.  He married Mary Ann Normile (Normoyle).  I have seen various spellings of her name.  They had a child in Tasmania in the 1950's 1 after they were freed.  The child's name was James John Dodson.

Sorry, that should have 1850s.  He was born on 30 January 1851.
