This is getting really exciting - I'd better not get too carried away until I get the marriage Cert, which I'll order tomorrow, I think.

Thanks so much to all of you. I'm going to check out FreeBMD for Eileen/Ellen Margaret and look carefully at all the names of Gray (Smyth/Smythe/Smith) children.

Well, I've ordered that 1913 Marriage Cert, yesterday. So now,I need to wait - despatch date 20th May. And thanks once again to all.

I had a good look at all possible Gray(Smith/Smyth/Smythe) children from 1913.. Eileen/Ellen M is a bit of a puzzle, but I'll put her on ice until the Cert arrives.

I also had a look at the Irish Newspaper sites for 1945, in case there was a Death Notice, but zilch! Most of his siblings were dead by 1945, so I wasn't too surprised.

Marriage Cert arrived this morning.

As we hoped/expected it was John Duncan Gray, telegraphist, and Eileen Margaret Smyth.
She's an actress (first one in the family)
John's father is William (deceased), police inspector ..
so I'm happy that this is my man, even if he's slightly promoted his father William - who was a head constable.

I'll probably go after his death cert next, but am taking time out from the past to do some current family stuff - visiting daughter and grandchildren in US.

Thank you all very much for the help. It's much appreciated.
I'm not marking this completed yet, as I'll probably be back in a couple of weeks for help with Eileen/Ellen Margaret!

now off to put a postem on FreeBMD.

I've finally sent off for John Gray's Death Cert today. I'll post when it arrives.

I've sort of given up on his possible children for now. I've looked at Eileens, Ellens, Helens ...
I must have another look at the Irish BMDs 1913-1925ish too.

thanks once again to all!

Death Cert Arrived this morning. It's my John Gray.

John Duncan Gray, telegraphist, widow E.M.Gray, living Queen Alexandra Mansions.

Thanks again for all the help.
Now to stick a Postem on FreeBMD.

I suppose the next thing would be to look for a newspaper report of his death. Any idea what paper to start with?

Does that fit with what I found in an earlier post?  " There is a John D Gray in the British Postal Service Appointment Books appointed 9th March 1894 as a Tel learner, Dublin. "

Thank you Dawn, I'll have a look at that presently. Will bookmark now.

Yes, groom,
he's a telegraphist on the 1901 census (Dublin) and 1911 (London) .. it was interesting to see how young he started in the GPO.
Two of his older brothers also worked in the GPO, but remained in Ireland.
