Adelina SIBLEY of Bodmin
« on: Sunday 12 May 13 01:56 BST (UK) »
In 1856, Adelina SIBLEY of Bodmin, a single woman aged 22, migrated to South Australia aboard Hooghly. On the same ship were the families of two SIBLEY brothers of St Teath:

Joseph SIBLEY (33)
Susannah nee OLIVER (32)
Susannah (10)
Elizabeth Ann Olive (8)
Joseph (6)
James Oliver (4)
Adelina (2)
Emma (1)
Simon Libby (born @ sea)

Simon Libby SIBLEY (29)
Elizabeth nee CORY (29)
Alfred (1)
Esther (baby)

Can anyone tell me if/how Adelina is related to these families? SIBLEY is sometimes spelt SIBLY.

Thanks
Nudge

Strange?! ;D

I found this marriage on Cornwall-OPC-database:
18th September 1856 at Bodmin
John Davis, 31, Bachelor, Barrister's Clerk, of Pump Court, Temple, London
Adelina Sibly, 22, Spinster, Dressmaker, of St Nicholas Street

Fathers: John Davis (deceased), Barrister's Clerk  and  Richard Sibly (deceased), bookseller

Sure enough, she is on the 1851 census:
Reference HO107, Piece 1904, Folio 388, Page 44
St Nicholas Street, Bodmin

Sibley, Mary  Head  Widow  F  52  Annuitant  b Bridport, Dorset
Sibley, Adalina  Daughter  F  17  Dress Maker  b Bodmin

However, Adelina & John Davis are in London in 1861 and 1871!

That is strange, as shipping records showed she arrived in Adelaide on 25th July 1856.

Do we have an imposter travelling to SA on her assisted passage?

I thought that, too! ;D :o

You might want to look at Cornwall-OPC-Database (.org)?
I can see at least 7 baptisms (including Joseph, 1823, and Simion Libby, 1826) at St Teath to Joseph & Susannah Sibly.

And also an Adelaide in 1845, to Joseph & Susan?

The Biographical Index of Sth Aust. which isn't always correct, has:-
Adelina C born 1845 to Joseph and Susan, and then Adelina FISHER born 1854.

Adelina C seems to fit with "Adelaide" b.1845 mentioned by KGarrad in last post.

The Bio Index also has Adelina FISHER and Emma m. KEOUGH as twins born 1854.

That differs from the Ships list as well but could be an error in the BISA.

Sometimes people registered as passengers but were unable to make the voyage and their names weren't taken off the passenger lists.

FamilySearch has this baptism:

24th November 1833  at Bodmin
Adelina Sibley, born 9th October 1833
Daughter of Richard & Mary Sibly

Aha!  Transcribed on Cornwall OPC as Lilly!
Residing at St Nicholas Street, father a bookseller - which all fits. ;D
