See http://www.studymore.org.uk/4_13_ta.htm#Nottinghamshire which has information on Nottinghamshire County Asylum near Sneinton.

1880: The asylum only served the county, and city patients were moved to the new asylum at Mapperley Top.

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.

Is this the right death?

Deaths Jun 1921

Mather    Alice   age 47    Nottingham    7b   289

Do you have the actual cert, what did she die of? Maybe the asylum took patients with a certain illness?

Have you found her in 1911- is she at home and fit and well then?

she was at home on the 1911 census, however, it is confusing as she is on it but crossed out and on the far right column it says 'feeble minded'. the cause of death on the death certificate was TB of the lungs with no post mortem :(

she probably was in sneinton which I believe became saxondale because that is the area of nottingham the family came from.

Saxondale Hospital, Radcliffe on Trent, Nottinghamshire, was built to replace Sneinton Asylum. It was officially opened 24.7.1902. In the census it says she was an imbecile, as she is crossed out then it seems she was not resident at the address at the time of the census. Asylum inmates were only shown by initials in censuses.

As well as being shown just by their initials they were often down with just a first initial and a surname.

Did she die at the City Asylum Mapperley? Have you tried looking for her there in 1911?

In the 1911 census all the inmates of the Notts County Lunatic Asylum, Redcliffe on Trent, are shown by initials. In the City Lunatic Asylum they are shown by surname and initial.
