Venlaw in Peebles
« on: Thursday 16 May 13 18:19 BST (UK) »
I have a couple of my relatives who when they died and also on the censuses listed Venlaw, Peebles as their residence.  The husband was listed as a gardener.  On one of the census the address is listed as Venlaw Stable Cottage.  On all other death registers and censuses the address is simply listed as Venlaw.  Would this address be referring to Venlaw Castle or something else.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi

Can you date the census - most of the houses in the Venlaw area are less than 100 years old - depending on the dates you have the Venlaw reference is likely to be the castle and surrounding estate houses.  The castle is a hotel/ restaurant now.

1861 Census Residence: Venlaw
1871 Census Residence: Gardeners House Teklan
1881 Census Residence: Venlaw Stable Cottage
1899 Death Registry Residence: Venlaw, Peebles (This is for the husband)
1875 Death Registry Residence: Venlaw, Peebles (This is for the wife)
1865 Birth Registry Residence: Venlaw, Peebles (Birth of their son)

The husband was listed as a gardener.  I'm visiting Scotland in June so if the residence relates to the Castle I thought I'd pop in and take a look around.  Do you know whether its much of a hike by foot from the A703 to the Castle/Hotel??  Thanks for any info.

Hi David

I would think that it is very likely that your relatives lived and worked on the castle estate. You may get photos and other details at Peebles library in the High Street.  The castle is 10 minutes very pleasant walk from the A703 - easiest way from the town is the entrance just opposite the Honda garage - just past the bus station.

do you have names? My late parents built a house in the old walled Garden at Venlaw and I think they were given the Gardener's notebooks by someone

The names of my relatives in Venlaw were Laurence Forrestb1825 (sometimes his first name was spelt differently) and his wife was Ann Inglesb1826.  I know two of his kids Janet and Margaret Forrestb1854 also lived in Venlaw.  Thanks for any info.  :D

had a look at the Gardener's Diary, it is dated 1805, so too early to be your ancestors
