1691 Bill of Indictment written in Latin
« on: Friday 24 May 13 18:54 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am new to this group  and  my last post  was giving me trouble adding my  document in small enough form as by the guide line.

This document is about Robert Lynus  my 5th great grandfather who lived in Skelton, Yorkshire.
I don't know much about Robert Lynus other than he died  about 1733 and left no will.

I was hoping to learn more about what is written about him in this document.  I understand  he was neglecting his duties as constable of Skelton.

I would be most appreciate if  you could tell me more of what is stated in this  paper.
Thanks

This was quite a challenge.  :)
I've had a go at it, but I very much hope that someone else will come along and correct or improve it.

==============
North Riding in the County of York – The jurors for our lord and lady the King and Queen upon their oath present that Robert Lynus lately of Skelton on the 16th day of April in the third year of the reign of our lord and lady William and Mary now the King and Queen of England etc., being the Constable for our lord and lady the King and Queen in Skelton aforesaid in the North Riding aforesaid in the county aforesaid, was negligent in the affairs of our lord and lady the King and Queen and was lacking in relation to Skelton aforesaid in the North Riding aforesaid in the county aforesaid, and in carrying out the several precepts and orders of the Justices of the Peace of our lord and lady the King and Queen in the North Riding aforesaid in the county aforesaid, and did perpetrate a crime by giving protection to several felons and transgressors in the North Riding aforesaid in the county aforesaid, by hearing and determining a case that was assigned to him in Skelton, and by neglecting to carry out and complete his duties, against the peace of our lord and lady the now King and Queen, their crown and dignity.
==============

Above the indictment is written - cogn: finis tax[atum?] x s.  This suggests he was bound under a recognizance of 10 shillings (a fine payable if he failed to appear in court).
