Great York Street, Bethnal Green **Completed**
« on: Friday 31 May 13 12:01 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
Can anybody tell me where Great York Street, Bethnal Green was/is?? My great great grandmother was born there but when I try to find the street, or references to it I get conflicting and confusing information. Her birth was registered as being at 3 Great York Street on 3 April 1843. On the 26th June 1843 she was baptised at St Leonards Shoreditch and the address recorded was recorded as  York Street? I find researching London sooooooo confusing as districts changed regularly making finding streets near impossible. This is all made harder by the fact I'm researching from Oz.
Can anybody enlighten me? ???
Thanks
Sue

Hi

As listed here, you can see how many "York" streets there were 1857-1929 around BethnalGreen/Shoreditch

Do you wish to give us your relative's name (+ parents)?
May make it easier to find it

Great York Street (aka York Street) was partly in Bethnal Green and partly in Shoreditch. It ran north/south between Church Street and Anchor Street, parallel with Shoreditch High Street. See the bottom left-hand corner of this map square, where it is labelled York Street.

http://mapco.net/cary1837/cary21b.htm

Church Street is now Redchurch Street, E1. Most of the small streets to the south of it have now gone.

In 1843 St Leonard Shoreditch would have been the nearest Anglican church for the baptism. You'll see it marked on the same map, a little to the north, at the junction of Shoreditch and Hackney Road.

Thankyou very much.
I know this map well as I've poured over it a million times. Your explanation fits with what I thought. I can not log all this in my tree. ;D

Hi

You may be able to confirm the "theory" if the couple are in that address in 1841.
If you can find them then you may be able to work out(confirm)  the streets around them.

If you tell us the parents then we can all have a go at finding them?
