Hello Kay

It is is the correct Victor S  who died in Neath 1942 and married Neath 1812

The fathers name does not appear on the marriage certificate does it.

I had a look but I m obviously not doing something right as I couldn't find them myself

Do you think we have the family in Manchester as his parents

He worked in the circus 1911 and was living in Redcar saying he was born in Leeds
Thanks Lesley

As KGarrad said, you will need to purchase the certificate to see all the details, including who he names as father
All you can see online is the entry in tbe index

Here is the index entry for the marriage

Apr/May/Jun 1912
Neath  reference 11a 1357

Victor S Herman

Once you know who he names as father, you will have more of an idea if any (or none!) of the families found might be him.

You can order the cert from www.gro.gov.uk , for £9.25, quoting that reference
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

census information is Crown Copyright from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi Lesley

Kgarrad is correct.  You can only see the marriage indexes on the link I posted.  Apologies my post was misleading.  I haven't seen the actual certificates.

I do like the possibility of the Victor S Shackleton that Kgarrad posted changing his surname.  The index on FreeBMD list a marriage of a Victor Stephen Shackleton in the Leeds Registration District  in 1907 and he does disappear in the later census

Kay

Edit - I presume from your comment about the lack of a father on his marriage cert that you already have Victor's marriage cert in 1912

Well thank you that is interesting
I have ordered the marriage certificate now for Victor Herman in Neath

How do we know Shackleton disappeared to the circus
What was the reason behind or finding him changing his name

I still think we may be a year out the Manchester family as he was born 1885 ? Not sure

I cross-checked all the Victors, born 1885 in Yorkshire, on the 1911 census against those in the 1901 census.

Names that appear in both obviously aren't your chap!
Shackleton comes up as the best fit; although there is also a Humphreys and an Allanson on 1901?

I also used FreeBMD for births in Leeds, 1884-1886, for Victor (any surname).
Of course his birth may have been registered in a district outside of Leeds?

I can see the birth registration of Victor S Shackleton.
I can also see Victor Shackleton in 1901 - as I pointed out.
Can't see him in 1911!

Victor Herman doesn't appear in any census other than 1911; and there doesn't appear to be a birth registration for him?

It's all guesswork - intelligent guesswork, of course! ;D

Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Yes initially I did think he may have made up his birth in Leeds to get the job there.

Lets hope the marriage certificate has the fathers name on it.

Thank you both very much your help this morning.Very kind

This Victor is my sisters hubby s grandfather.

My ancestors are the Toldpuddle Martyrs which has proved far easier than Victor

Hello,
I now have the marriage certificate for Victor Herman born 1886 aged 26 in 1912 Married Neath
His father was called John and was deceased. He was a furniture broker.

There is a death for a John Herman Droitwich, Worcestershire 1889 .3 years after Victor was born.

There are some other connections with Droitwich and furniture business re a Victor Herman but nothing tying up,just yet
Any more ideas
Thank you,
Lesley

On the marriage certificate says John  Herman he is a Furniture Broker.
Do you think Shackletons took Victor in.
