Ameys in Essex
« on: Saturday 01 June 13 22:21 BST (UK) »
Hi. I'm researching the Amey branch of my family tree. I have got back to Joseph Amey b.1782 Eastwood. I think his father might be a Samuel and his wife was either Ann Rice (but this doesn't tie in with his son Samuel's birth. SEAX records with Ann as mother suggest 1806, whereas everything else I found, including his death cert, say 1812.) or Elizabeth Smith as I found on some other family trees on a well known genealogy site!
I have searched the records of about thirty parishes surrounding Eastwood, but can find very few other Ameys (sometimes spelled Amee or Amie). I found a Joseph and Elizabeth Amie, who might be a cousin, and a slim chance that he's he father of my Joseph. He died before Samuel b.1812, so can't be my Joseph b.1782.
Are there any Ameys from Essex out there who can shed any light on this please?
I'm searching parishes further afield on SEAX in the meantime.
I'm also suspecting that prior to Joseph in 1782, the Ameys might have been in another county ... Maybe Kent?
Looking forward to any help.

I suppose you have already found that Joseph Amey married twice in Gt. Stambridge. Firstly to a Martha Wright in 1803 and then to Ann Rice in 1804, or I should say that at the 1804 marriage Joseph was listed as a widower.

Yes I have thanks. It all goes cold prior to them. I think Ann is probably my 4x great grandmother, as there is no-one else listed in any of the thirty surrounding parishes that I have trawled through!
It's where to go from there really.
I have resorted to going through all the parishes in Essex for marriages 1750 ish to 1800 to see if there are any Ameys. Of course, then name could have morphed from names such as Amis/ Ames/ Amos etc and so I could have just missed them!
Thanks for replying.

Update and request:

I've found Joseph's marriage to Ann rice in 1804. Found his birth in 1782 eastwood, Essex to samuel and elizabeth Amie. The first child I can find, another Samuel was born in 1771 in Eastwood and a daughter, Elizabeth in 1784.

Can anyone see a marriage for Samuel and Elizabeth? I can't find one anywhere 😢 🔎

Hi nannyj

Small world. I have a John Amey, born in 1822 in Canewdon, Essex, son of James Amey and Lucy Amey nee Warner. Lucy is my direct ancestor. She remarried and died in 1829 in childbirth. Not yet found an Eastwood connection but am trying to trace John Amey after 1822. He seemed to not have died as an infant or took his stepfathers surname of Cornwell. He may connect to your Amey's somewhere.

Hi Coombs,
I have no Ameys living in eastwood prior to this either. There are some further north in essex, but can't find any connection.

Update:
I also found a death for Samuel Amie 1798 in great Stambridge. Elizabeth then remarries in 1799 to John Edwards, also great Stambridge. She has two children there with him. Both names John. One dies 1803 and the other 1804.

Still looking for a marriage for Samuel and Elizabeth. I’m assuming around 1770,as that’s when their first child is born.
