Wilton Gaol
« on: Monday 03 June 13 10:59 BST (UK) »
One of my ancestors was a fairly regular visitor to this establishment.
Job Skinner was sent down for 2 weeks (August  1865, assault) a month (September 1881 drunk and disorderly) 2 weeks with hard labour ( June 1888 drunk and disorderly).
Are there any records that would show his admission and discharge that may give me any more information about the old rogue? Is this too early for 'mugshots'?
I believe their is a history of the gaol but it is out of print and not available from local bookshops. does anyone have a copy or access to one?
The same individual was also listed as being in the workhouse at the time of the 1901 census. Again any further information would be greatly appreciated. Mr Skinner was a sawyer and I would also be interested to learn where he worked.
Thank you in anticipation.

How old was he at the time of these imprisonments?

I can see a Job Skinner 1876 assault in Somerset.

If he was born Taunton 1843 he is still in the workhouse 10 years later.

That's the same person. He escaped with a fine in 1876 I think. I have him down as b 1833 (28 at time of 1861 census) and lodging in East St in 1911 (listed as John but his occupation and proximity to his estranged family lead me to believe this is him. I am interested in your finding though. Can you help with gaol records please?

You probably need to look at this:

 http://www1.somerset.gov.uk/archives/

Should give info on what is available at the Somerset Archive. Nothing online, but there are calendars of prisoners and description books if you are lucky. I have found some info on some of my "lot" who ended up in front of the Magistrates
