Request For 1871 Census Lookup
« on: Monday 03 June 13 15:15 BST (UK) »
1871 Census Lookup - seeking a McCREADIE family, probably vicinity of Ayr, with at least 2 sons, James ( b. c 1862) and Hugh (b. c 1865). They would have been approximately 9 and 6 years old respectively. Both died as a result of an explosion at Drumley Pit on 9 Sep 1898. Drumley Pit was located at Annbank, 5 miles east of Ayr.

Other than James left a widow and 7 children, I have no further information.

Kind regards.

I had a look on A******y but couldn't find anything. The best source for the Scottish census is the pay to view site ScotlandsPeople.

Thanks JMS
As I can trace my McCreadies from Ardrossan south through to Ballantrae and Stranraer, it could potentially cost cost me a king's ransom to locate one family in Ayr. I know of at least five in the Ayr locale.

I was hoping SKS had the 1871 Census on CD.

Hi
I found a James McCreadie on the 1891 census living in Tarbolton Ayrshire with his wife Maggie and 5 children which would put him a few miles away from Annbank and listed as a coal miner but can not seem to find any on the 1871 census.

Thanks anyway Maisie76
Since commencing my research 12 years ago, the McCREADIEs have caused me grief due to various spellings and marriages with several members of other families, e.g. John McCready marries Agnes Smith, then James McReedy marries Jessie Smith, then Lizzie MacReedie marries James Smith -  :'(

Also the Father died late 1860s early 1870s so they may have been in some sort of school away from the Mother if she could not cope having all her children to look after alone, just a possibility.

Hi, I would agree with maisie76. That does appear to be the brothers along with mother, siblings and grandparents etc on the 1871 Census . Both James and Hugh's death certificates give their parents names as James McCreadie (deceased) and Martha McCreadie nee Clark. On James's his fathers occupation is Coal miner on Hugh's it appears to say Shoemaker.
Both men were married - James to a Margaret Savage. Hugh to a Janet Thomson.
James died on the 9th Sept 1898, Hugh died four days later on 13th September of extensive burns, shock and exhaustion. :(
James's death is registered by his brother-in-law P Savage. Hugh's is registered by an uncle J Clark of Annbank.

Looby :)
