KELLY family from Witton-cum-Twambrook, Northwich
« on: Thursday 13 June 13 09:34 BST (UK) »
I am interested in the baptisms of the Kelly family in Witton cum Twambrooks from about 1780 till 1801.  Find my Past has images of the registers, but they have been so badly filmed that important details (ie Name of infant !) is missing.

I know Elizabeth was christened 20 Aug 1786, an unknown Kelly on 12 June 1797 and Hannah in 1801.  These entries all list parents names (John and Betty Kelly) and grandparents names and origins (Charles and Elizabeth Kelly of Hanley and Thomas and Mary Wrench of illegible)

What I would really like to know is the name of the unknown child, christened in 1797, and where Thomas and Mary Wrench came from.

If the unknown child is who I hope, he would be my 3xgreat grandfather and Thomas and Mary Wrench my 5xgt grandparents

Can anyone help please??

I would suggest asking Cheshire Archives for a photocopy of "both facing pages of the register" (small fee) - but I would check first to see if the images used by FindMyPast were from the original LDS films that Cheshire Archives also use. If they are, then the films at Cheshire Archives probably won't give you the name of the child either - you would then need to ask them if they would be prepared to look at the original register for you (which may incur an additional cost).
The Cheshire Archives film of the parish registers should give you the abode of Thomas & Mary Wrench as FindMyPast have just chosen to not include the image from the facing page of the extended register which of course provides all the pertinent details such as date of birth and date of baptism -- although they do provide this on the index!

There is also a microfilm of these registers at Northwich Library.

It is frustrating to have to pay for an image you should have access to with your subscription, but FindMyPast seem unmoved by various pleas to make them available.

odessa.

Thanks Odessa, I think you may be right.  I posted on here first in case someone was sitting in the Archives, twiddling their thumbs and wondering what to do next!

I will leave it for today, to see if anyone can help.   If not, I'll email the archives.

Not much help I`m afraid.

Family Search has the same problem, so does this mean that there is no name entered?

Thank you for trying!

The problem is that the record covers two pages in the register, but the microfilmers have tried to get away with making only one image, so the left hand margin of the first page is off the photo, as is the right hand margin of the second page.  Sometimes you can guess what it says, eg....zabeth, dau of etc is probably Elizabeth, but I can't guess in my case.  Sight of the original or a decent image is what's needed.

Ah right. All I can say is that in the past Cheshire Archives have been very helpful to me. If you have the exact date and place, they have checked for me without any charge.
Full details may be in the Parish register transcripts .
Good luck.

First for the good news - Cheshire Archives came up trumps and looked at the record for me free of charge.  They were able to read the name of the child and the address of the grandparents.

Now for the bad news; the child's name (George) was not the one I wanted (William)   :'( :'(

Thanks to both for your help.  I'll mark this thread as completed, and maybe post a separate query to find William.
