Phoebe Wills b. 1821 Hinkley, Leic., Father Daniel. Were they Jewish?
« on: Thursday 13 June 13 22:47 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to separate fact from legend in my family tree. My Dad was usually right about everything. He told us that a grandmother or great-grandmother on his mother' side was Jewish and her name was Sarah.  I have traced his mother (Ellen Giles, b.1892 in Lichfield, Staffordshire)'s side to the Giles Family in Worchestershire and the Wills family in Leicestershire. Her paternal Grandmother was Phoebe Wills, born 1821 in Hinkley. Phoebe's father was Daniel Wills, and she had sisters named Hepzibah and Hannah. Her mother's name was Mary on the census. My grandmother's maternal side was from Staffordshire, Roberts and Riley.  Supposedly this Jewish ancestor was a Levite (Levy, Levi, etc.). Is there any evidence of a Jewish community in Leichestershire in the 18th or 19th century? Any ideas on where to look and what I'm looking for? Thanks.

The 1841 census shows both Daniel & Sarah as born in Leicester

Both were shown as 50 and they had a 12yr old Mary Wills with them.  The 1841 does not show precise details for:

Relationship
Birthyear
Birthplace

Thank You so much Carole!! I dont know where I got the name Mary Wills from, guess it was inaccurate.  I went to "Jewish Gen" and looked up Wills, and got a few hits in England, Ireland, and Wales. For some it was an anglicization of Weil, from France.  Now I know I'm on the right track! Janice

Thanks Willsy!! I saw in your tagline you have Hursts from Leicester. Phoebe's sister Hannah married John Hurst. So it looks like Daniel was married more than once.  Mary Atkins was the mother and Sarah Smith was the step mother. She must have been a very good mother, to have the family remembering her 5 generations later. Janice

Willsy, I just connected with a long-lost cousin from the Daniel Wills - Mary Atkins line!!  I'd love to have the list of pre-1800 Wills marriages.
