Bert Oliver Gookey
« on: Tuesday 18 June 13 19:15 BST (UK) »
Hi many thanks to Kgarrad & Keyboard86 for help with Henry George Simmons.
My next post is for the surname Gookey and a total mystery.
We have a WW1 discharge document for Bert Oliver Gookey Royal Engineer sapper No 325636
He enlisted 2/3/1916 at Islington aged 18y, 5m.
The surname is VERY rare and we have traced all Gookey entries from the GRO but this man has not shown up anywhere and certainly does not show on the 1901 census nor the 1911 census, there is no Birth, Marriage, or death for him but the name on  the docs is plainly GOOKEY.
so can anyone throw some light on this please.

Ernest Mason   15 b. Islington, London
Frederick Mason   10 b. Islington, London
John Mason   7 b. Islington, London

RG13 Piece 182 Folio 52 Page 5

Birth record -

There is also this birth registration which might be interesting:

Births Jun 1897
POCOCK  Bert Oliver G
Edmonton 3a 354

Perhaps he was illegitimate, and G = Gookey?

Rambler

Added - not sure, as there seems to be a possible match for him in 1901 with married parents.  :/

On Bert's Service Record he gives an address of 340 Goswell Road, Islington.

The 1920 London Electoral Register has a John William Gookey, Lydia Alice Gookey and Bert Oliver Gookey living at 340 Goswell Road, Islington.

Looks like he is Bert Oliver George Pocock  - 1939 electoral role in Edmonton - who married Rosalie Rebecca Pritchard in 1919 in Cornwall so possibly can be discounted?

Yes - the birth reg looked possible, but I think it's a red herring.  The Mason connection looks much more promising.
