are the public graves where William and Mary are unmarked?
The terminology in the registers is usually Public grave and Private / Purchased grave.
Private/Purchased:
over and above the cost of the actual burial fee, the family chose to purchase the rights of future burials in that plot. These graves are more likely to have other family members interred in the same grave and, should the family wish, a headstone was allowed to be erected.

Public
there was the usual fee for burial but no rights to burial or to erect a headstone was purchased. Though in some cemeteries I have found other family members in the same grave if they died within a short period of time, its usually rare to find family members all in the same grave for public graves and these graves usually have x amount of unrelated people interred.

Just to confuse matters, in 'some' cemeteries in the UK it appears to have been possible to purchase the rights of burial for a public grave at a later date.
So if the grave wasn't full and a family member died at a later date when the children had maybe grown up and could share the cost between them, they could ask if it was possible to purchase the plot and erect a headstone.

Yes, thanks Boo. Very interesting.

Boo/Marienne, can I double-check with you the record you kindly sent twelve hours ago. There's no 'plot number' for Mary, just area AD, is that right?:

Mary CHARLETON d 231 Vauxhall Rd age 65 int 26/3/1914 in public AD.

I'm going to Ford Cemetery tomorrow to say hi.

Best wishes
Nick

Hi Nick
Marienne is in Australia and I think its late there so she may not see this before you go tomorrow.
I looked at the burial records and they say this lady was buried in section AD   grave 824

I was there last night. AD is mainly a grassy area with no sight of any graves at all, the nearest being in the JB section adjacent.

Sorry for confusing people, I was trying to say that AD has nothing to identify graves, although there are obviously individual grave numbers underneath.
I think that I should go to bed here in Liverpool  :).
