There are about twelve men with that name on the WW1 medal rolls, and double that if you add a middle name. And that is just the army. You need to give more details such as date/place of birth, and maybe next of kin and hope he is one of the 30% whose WW1 record survives.

If you know when he died there may have been a piece in the local newspaper about his WW1 service given his experience.

Ken

There were only two William Harold Marston men born/registered within a reasonable age for service in WWI. One in Wolverhampton (1890) and your grandfather registered in the Leicester area March Qtr. 1896. Free BMD. A few words of advice. Stay away from 9 2 1896  as that could cause confusion. Always use 9 February 1896.

His medal card confirms arrival at Gallipoli 1ith 11th Manchesters on 14th July 1915. They had sailed from Liverpool on 30th June.

The battalion left Gallipoli in December 1915 and they eventually arrived in France in July of 1916.

His card also shows that he saw service with the 13th Bn, though it's impossible to know when the transfer took place without his records.

There's more detail at a Battalion level on the excellent Manchester Regiment site here -> http://www../11th%20batt.htm
