On 4 July

In 1878 a second cousin 2 x removed, Margaret Conquest, was born in Vienna Township, Michigan, the daughter of Josiah Conquest and Hannah Elizabeth Thorsby.

Another second cousin 2 x removed, William John Conquest was born in Michigan in 1891.  He was the son of Samuel Conquest and Anna M. Batterbee.

On 5 July 1893 four of my second cousins once removed were baptised.  They were John Frederick Leopold, Georgiana, Augustus William Leopold and Jenny Ada Kelly, children of John Andrew Kelly and Georgiana Taylor.  John (who later became an actor with the stage name Jack Leopold) had been born in 1884, Georgiana in 1885, Jenny Ada in 1889, but Augustus was born earlier in 1893.  As he died in 1895, I wonder if he was a sickly child and this was the reason for the parents having all of them baptised together.

A few days late now, but on the 4th of July it would have been my grandparents' 77th wedding anniversary.

Today in 1900 my grandfather, John Frederick Bernard Howard was born in Battersea; first child of John and Ellen Mary Eliza (nee Viney).......well always Viney because they never married! His tale of his father "Russian John" sparked my interest in family history. Found out lots about the wider family but Russian John remains a mystery.
Grandfather married Mary Johanna Kingsman in 1921at St Clements, Kensington and 2 children were born but the second child died aged 7 months. My grandmother could never speak about her little son but my grandpa always remembered his birthday. They lived in Shepherds Bush for most of their lives, moving to Dorset in their 70s and John died in 1981.

On 9th July 1885, my 3xG grandfather Walter Brown died in Corbiehall, Bo'ness, at 9.30 in the evening and of a malignant tumour of the neck. According to the death certificate he was 74, which is close enough, he was 73 and 11 months. Walter had been a widower for 12 years, his wife Margaret Dunlop having died in 1883.
Walter was the fourth of ten children born to John Brown and Janet Gibb and worked his whole life as a blacksmith. His daughter Janet was my great great grandmother.
