Born today in 1905 in Kensington a gt. uncle, William George Kingsman;  son of John and Annie (nee George). William married in 1937 and spent time in WW2 as a POW of the Japanese.  Family legend is that when he returned home rice was never again served in the house.  He died in 1973.

I'm not sure yet of the actual day of the marriage but on 1st July 1748, my 5xG grandparents John Wallace and Agnes Bishop gave up their names for proclamation to be married. They gave one Scots pound to the poor, which I think must have been a tidy sum in those days. Both were living in the parish of Ratho in Scotland. Agnes is still a work in progress but I know John was 21 and had been baptized alongside his cousin Mary Wallace in 1727. They had six children that I know of, James, David, Alexander (who died in childhood), John, Alexander and Agnes. The youngest, Agnes, was my 4xG grandmother.

Seoras,

That must have been a fortune.  How generous of them.  Happy name giving day to them both.

Hi Susan, I expect they had little choice. This was probably the fee the Kirk was charging in that particular parish for a marriage as one of the ways to raise poor relief. But yes it must have been a small fortune for them, their families being ag labs, weavers etc.
