Help making sense of the Turcatti family in Australia
« on: Monday 01 July 13 14:20 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to look into an in-laws family tree with the vague information i have.

Teresa Rosa Turcatti was born in Coolgardie, WA in 1909.  In the two previous years, there were births of Natalina (1907) and Stephen (1908) in Boulder, WA so it could be assumed they were siblings.  In trying to find their parents, trove only suggested one option Stephano Turcatti who owned a saloon in Kalgoorlie.  There was one other Turcatti in Kalgoorlie in 1902, John, and his wife died in 1902.  Could John and Stephano have been brothers?  I spot Mr and Mrs S Turcatti and 3 children boarding the GMS Gneisenau in Fremantle in 1910 but not sure where it's headed and don't find them again in WA.  If they are the same family as my in-law, I believe they went back to Italy and Rosa returned many years later with her husband and son.

In QLD, there are also Turcattis.  Peter Angelo Turcatti died in 1922, son of Joseph Turcatti and Lucia Pedrini.  According to an online family tree, he was born in 1862 in Lombardo, Italy.

That's about all I can find about the Turcatti family in Australia.  Can anyone help make the link betweeen John, Stephano and Peter?  Are they brothers?  Is Stephano, Teresa's father? Obviously buying Teresa Rosa's birth certificate may reveal more but just wondering if anyone can help me make the links here as I can't find anything obvious to connect them except the rarity of their name.
Any help appreciated!

Thanks,

Jenni

Hi Jen, Not much on tracing in WA as NSW based but one of the names you mentioned seems to have a link to a wife. See Under:

In QLD, there are also Turcattis.  Peter Angelo Turcatti died in 1922, son of Joseph Turcatti and Lucia Pedrini.  According to an online family tree, he was born in 1862 in Lombardo, Italy.

Peter Angelo I think may have been married to "Madglen Thompson" I actually think that is a transcription error and should be Magdalen. She was born in Australia in 1872 and died in Queensland 1947. I will see if there is a birth for her and a possible marriage maybe in WA.

Thanks Neil.  But looks like she was born in Victoria and she didn't marry Peter until 1921, 30 years after the birth of their first child!  Interesting....

For the marrying kind, Italian....There is only one marriage in WA on the indexes up to 1936 :o

They must have gone elsewhere.

Will keep looking

Neil, the son Peter died in 1920 so it's definitely the father's marriage and I found notes on an online tree that supports this.  Anyway, this isn't leading us down the right path yet...

Cupoflife,
Thanks for all the info.  That's interesting because a Maria Turcatti married a Lorenzo Simonelli in Cue, WA in 1904.  Maria lived until 97, dying in 1986.  That would have made her 15 when she married!  It's the only Turcatti marriage in WA and there are no Turcatti deaths (except for the wife of John Turcatti, Catherine)

Perhaps Maria was a sister of Stephano?

And if Stephano's wife was Teresa, that would make sense with her daughter being called Teresa Rosa.  Apparently she went by the name Rosa though.

Looks like we're getting closer.  But where is the marriage of Stephano and Teresa?  Unless, of course, it is a different Stephano...
